Planning your travel

Please plan to arrive at the Diakonia Retreat Center between 3:00 and 6:00 pm on Sunday if possible. If you are planning to arrive by plane, please speak with Presvytera Christine before booking so that she may advise you. For possible rideshare connections, or late arrivals or any other special request please indicate this on the Travel Form and we will try to match up people when and if possible. Contact us for assistance. We want to do what we can to help you arrive easily at the beautiful DRC in the mountains of South Carolina!

By Car

Please plan to arrive before dark, as it is much easier to locate the property during the day.  Please be aware that, during the last parts of your driving trip, you may pass through areas with no cellular signal. You may wish to have printed directions and/or maps as a backup to relying on your cellphone. If you must arrive after 6:30 PM, please make sure you let us know your ETA and have our cell phone numbers handy. Upon arrival, leave your luggage in your car in the upper parking lot and come down to the dining hall to find your housing assignment. You will be directed to the best area to park and unload.  After settling in, gather in the dining hall. 

By Plane

  The Diakonia Retreat Center is in a beautiful rural area in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in upstate South Carolina. Three airport options are listed below.

• (GSP) Greenville Spartanburg Intl. Airport is approximately 1.25 hours from DRC - Recommended

• (ATL) Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from DRC

• (CLT) Charlotte Douglas Airport is approximately 2.5 hours from DRC 

• (AVL) Ashville Regional Airport is approximately 1.25 hours from DRC

We plan to have a shuttle bus from the GSP airport. If you are arriving at a different airport, we can connect you with others arriving there (if any) if you would like to rideshare.

Shuttle from GSP: We expect that most attendees will arrive at GSP airport, and we can reserve a roundtrip shuttle bus service if we have enough confirmed reservations. Please plan to arrive at GSP before 3:30 PM on Sunday and depart after 2:00 PM on Saturday. It is your responsibility to notify us if you plan to take the airport shuttle bus. Please make your reservations early because in the event that we do not have enough reservations, we will cancel the service. 

The non-refundable reservation cost for the bus is $70 each way. Note that in the event there are not enough reservations to reserve the shuttle all monies will be refunded.

Your reservation must be paid in full 60 days before the start of your academy. For TLAA Winter 2025 that is Dec 2, 2024.

Other Options

Consider hiring an Uber or Lyft driver.

Some people choose to arrive on Saturday and stay in Greenville SC overnight and attend church at St. George Greek Orthodox Church before meeting the shuttle bus.

We do not accommodate any early arrivals to the Diakonia Retreat Center.
